Project Description

One of Maine’s most beloved food co-ops was seeking a complete brand refresh to coincide with a major facility renovation. Leadership was open to changing the logo, color palette, messaging and name to better reflect the store’s goals. At the same time, they needed to be careful not to alienate their passionate core membership. In everything Pica did, we carried through key brand elements of the Co-op’s history—an apple, a phrase already in use–and transformed them into the bridge between the store’s past and its future. In this way, we strengthened the brand overall, satisfied the Co-op’s loyal customers and broadened its appeal, all at the same time.

Fun fact: The Belfast Community Co-op loves its “heart-apple” logo mark: it’s even the design for the custom-fabricated bike rack in front of the store!

The new visual identity system needed to play well with brand standards from the National Co-op Grocers.

Pica developed a cohesive, modular system that could carry the brand into its next chapter and beyond.

The Belfast Community Co-op loves its “heart-apple” logo mark so much that it’s even the basis for the custom-fabricated bike rack in front of the store!

We brought in Maine-based illustration genius Scott Whitehouse to develop tattoo-inspired artwork that speaks to the ethos of the region.

“We began the work with Pica to help us update the look and feel of our marketing and messaging (and later, our website) as we move into our fifth decade of business. Pica demonstrated the care and consideration needed to work with our unique business and deliver results [that would work for our member-owners]. At every step of the process, the Pica team took great care to assure our needs were met, that we received a stellar product that we were satisfied with, and that we had a great experience. The team provided high-quality options and deliverables and met every challenge along the way with ease.”
